Key points
- Compare the same asset, budget, payment currency and destination. Otherwise, your quotes answer different cost questions.[s1][s5][s6]
- Your limit order is not automatically a maker order. Immediate execution can attract the taker fee.[s2][s3]
- Zero trading fees do not necessarily remove spreads, subscription charges, payment costs or withdrawal costs.[s4][s8]
- Treat public schedules as research inputs. Your account's applicable tier and transaction confirmation determine the charge you should review.[s2][s5]
What should your total-cost comparison include?
Define your endpoint before comparing costs: an exchange balance, crypto in your wallet, or money back in your bank. A trade-only comparison stops at the first endpoint. If you intend to withdraw, add the relevant withdrawal cost rather than presenting a trading fee as the whole bill.[s5][s9]
For cash funding, record the currency, transfer method, provider charge and any bank charge separately. Kraken explains that its deposit charge excludes charges from your own bank and that intermediary banks can charge or convert currency. A transfer described as free by the exchange can therefore still cost you money outside the platform.[s6]
If you fund with crypto instead, check the receiving deposit minimum after network costs and any asset-specific deposit charge. Kraken warns that deposits below its required minimum can be lost and that a later qualifying deposit will not rescue the first one. A cheaper-looking funding route is not usable if your intended amount cannot be credited.[s10]
How do instant quotes and order books differ?
Compare the product within the exchange, not just the exchange name. Coinbase documents a spread in simple buy, sell and conversion quotes, while Advanced interacts with the order book without that added spread. That does not make an order book spread-free in the market sense: you still buy against available offers and sell against bids.[s1][s7]
Kraken separately describes Instant Buy/Sell charges, payment charges and a spread in its quoted price. Its subscription waiver does not remove every cost or apply to every trading interface. Use the table to identify what each screen prices, then obtain the relevant account preview rather than importing a fee from another product.[s4]
| Mechanism | What you compare | What the headline can omit | Sources |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coinbase simple trade | Your total cash debit and quoted crypto receipt | Spread, payment-sensitive charges and regional differences | [s1] |
| Coinbase Advanced | Applicable fee tier and available execution prices | Bid-ask spread, market impact and any later withdrawal | [s2][s7][s5] |
| Kraken Instant Buy/Sell | Quoted receipt plus applicable payment charges | A spread can remain even with a trading-fee waiver | [s4] |
| Kraken order-book trade | Maker or taker treatment of your actual execution | A crossing limit order can take liquidity rather than add it | [s3] |
| Subscription-supported purchase | Membership cost allocated across eligible purchases | Plan limits, excluded order types and retained spreads | [s8] |
Will a limit order actually lower your fee?
A limit order controls your acceptable execution price; it does not guarantee maker treatment. Kraken says an order matched immediately against an existing order takes liquidity. Its post-limit option instead requires maker placement or cancellation, which means you must be willing for the order not to execute.[s3]
Coinbase explains that an immediately matched portion can pay taker fees while a remaining portion rests and later pays maker fees. You therefore need the execution record, not merely the order label, to reconcile the final charge. Your qualifying tier at order time matters, so a newly reached tier does not automatically reprice the earlier order.[s2]
A market order prioritizes immediate execution at available prices rather than a particular displayed price. Coinbase warns that an order can fill in portions at several prices. If your comparison assumes the best visible offer applies to the entire quantity, inspect the depth available for that quantity before treating the estimate as executable.[s7]
How can you compare account quotes without double counting?
Record each preview with its timestamp, exact product, payment currency, total debit and asset receipt. Capture whether fees are included in the entered amount or added outside it. Coinbase says similar transactions can have different charges, so a saved preview describes that proposed transaction, not a permanent price available to every customer.[s1]
For an illustrative account-preview comparison, suppose Route A debits $500 and delivers 0.0098 BTC, while Route B debits $500 and delivers 0.0099 BTC. Dividing debit by receipt gives about $51,020 and $50,505 per BTC respectively. Those are invented teaching inputs, not retrieved Coinbase or Kraken quotes, and they imply no current Bitcoin price or platform winner.[s1][s4]
Do not subtract a disclosed fee again if the preview's receipt already reflects it. For an order book, distinguish an estimate from a completed fill, then use the actual filled quantity and charged fee to reconcile cost. The comparison only remains meaningful if both routes buy the same asset at comparable times and stop at the same endpoint.[s1][s7]
How can funding and withdrawal reverse the result?
Model withdrawal costs separately from the trade. Suppose an entirely hypothetical $100 trade costs 0.20%, or $0.20, and a subsequent withdrawal costs $4. Your explicit charges are $4.20 before any spread or funding cost; the withdrawal dominates. These figures illustrate Kraken's separate trading and withdrawal mechanisms, not its current rates or an account quote.[s3][s5]
Review both the fee and minimum on your selected crypto withdrawal. Kraken says displayed public charges can change and the confirmation contains the final fee. If you change the asset or network to pursue a lower fee, you have changed the comparison and must first confirm that the destination accepts exactly what you plan to send.[s5][s10]
A bank cash-out is another distinct route, with its own currency, processor, minimum and timing. Kraken's cash withdrawal documentation warns that processing times are estimates and some funding transactions impose holds. You should not assume an instant purchase means either immediate crypto withdrawal or immediate bank receipt.[s9]
When might a subscription or volume tier reduce cost?
A subscription can replace some eligible transaction charges with a recurring membership bill. Coinbase One's documented simple-trade benefit has plan-dependent limits, retained spreads and excluded products or charges. Count only fees your own plan actually waives, then allocate the membership cost across purchases you would make anyway.[s8]
For illustration, a hypothetical $20 monthly plan removing $2 per otherwise planned eligible purchase breaks even after ten purchases on explicit fees alone. At four such purchases, the waived fees total $8, less than the membership bill. Neither the $20 price nor the $2 saving is a published plan quote; different spreads or exclusions can change even this simplified outcome.[s8]
Check which activity contributes to a discount before projecting it. Kraken's maker/taker documentation excludes several purchase and pair categories from its fee-schedule trading volume. Extra turnover undertaken solely to reach a tier also incurs trading costs, so do not count an advertised tier as a saving without accounting for the transactions required to qualify.[s3]
Which access constraints should you check before funding?
A public rate does not prove that you can open an account, access a market or use a funding processor. Kraken's deposit documentation scopes methods by currency and region and tells you to consult the account funding page for current information. Check the actual available method before sending money, particularly where a table carries a provider-specific availability footnote.[s6]
Use your account's deposit instructions rather than copying bank details from a comparison article. Match the sending currency to the specified receiving method and include a reference when requested. Kraken warns that a wrong-currency transfer may be returned or incur additional charges, undermining a calculation built only around the nominal trading rate.[s6]
For a test transfer, define success as a credited deposit, not merely a successful transaction on the sending blockchain. Use the receiving account's current instructions because Kraken warns that its public deposit information can change without notice. Separate any deposit charge from an applicable address setup fee, which Kraken describes as a one-time charge on the first deposit to a newly generated address. Its ERC-20 tokens share one account address, so that setup fee applies only once during the initial creation. Do not budget it as a recurring cost for later transfers to that address.[s10]
What evidence supports your final comparison?
Keep a short record of the route you actually evaluated: funding instructions, fee tier, order preview or fills, and withdrawal confirmation. Compare net receipts for a purchase ending in crypto and net bank receipts for a sale ending in cash. A low trade charge cannot answer both questions without the corresponding exit cost.[s2][s5][s9]
Then state a conditional result: this available route had the lower measured cost for your amount and destination at the recorded time. Do not turn that observation into a universal cheapest-exchange ranking. Public product documentation explains where costs arise; only the applicable account screens and completed records can establish what your particular transaction costs.[s4][s9]
Frequently Asked Questions
Which crypto exchange is always cheapest?
You cannot establish an always-cheapest exchange from a headline fee. Compare your available product, amount, funding route and withdrawal endpoint using contemporaneous account previews. This guide does not supply a live account quote or platform ranking.
Does a zero-fee subscription remove the spread?
Not necessarily. Coinbase One explicitly retains a spread on eligible simple trades and excludes certain charges and products. Review your plan terms and include its membership bill in your own calculation.
Does every limit order pay a maker fee?
No. If your limit order matches immediately, it can incur taker fees. A post-only or equivalent setting can require maker placement, but you then accept cancellation or non-execution rather than a guaranteed purchase.
Can you ignore withdrawal costs if you trade infrequently?
No, if your intended endpoint is outside the exchange. A separate withdrawal fee or minimum can matter more than the trade charge for your amount. Review the final withdrawal confirmation instead of assuming a public schedule is a guaranteed quote.
Can you sell crypto and immediately receive money in your bank?
Do not assume so. Your cash withdrawal method has separate processing conditions, and funding-related holds can restrict withdrawals. Kraken describes its processing times as estimates, so use the applicable account instructions rather than a universal timing promise.
