Cardano
(ADA)

Cardano is a smart-contract blockchain, and ADA is its native currency rather than an ERC-20 token. ADA pays transaction fees, supports staking and participates in governance; assets issued on Cardano are distinct tokens and should not be confused with the network's own coin.

How does Cardano work?

Who created Cardano?

Charles Hoskinson and Jeremy Wood started Cardano, with IOHK, the Cardano Foundation and Emurgo contributing different roles at genesis. The network later developed community governance; its founding organizations are not interchangeable with ADA itself, and buying ADA does not buy shares in those organizations.

What is Cardano used for?

ADA is used for Cardano transaction fees, value transfers, stake delegation and governance participation. It also accompanies activity in Cardano applications, but a token or smart contract built there has its own purpose and risks; protocol functionality does not guarantee commercial adoption.

Where can you buy Cardano?

Check a platform's official site for native ADA purchases, account eligibility and Cardano withdrawals in your location. A Cardano information page or exchange comparison route does not establish those services; confirm that withdrawals reach your intended Cardano wallet before committing to a purchase.

Before you buy

No unexpired public-catalogue observation is available in this saved guide. This is not a delisting claim or proof that earlier observations were incorrect. Confirm the exact asset, trading access and withdrawal network through the provider before buying. All exchange checklists remain available at the end of this guide.

Before fees and spread. Rounded display, not network precision or an exchange minimum. This is an estimate, not an exchange order quote.

How much is one Cardano worth?

ADA is Cardano's native currency, not a token representing an ownership stake in the Cardano project. Ordinary Cardano delegation does not lock the delegated ADA; that is different from a provider imposing its own withdrawal restriction. If a current ADA quote is shown, use it to value the asset, then check the provider's purchase total. Do not treat a staking-reward estimate as part of today's quoted purchase price.

Cardano wallets & storage

How do you get a Cardano wallet?

Install a wallet explicitly supporting native ADA on Cardano mainnet and follow its official backup instructions. Cardano's resources link wallet options, but verify the chosen developer and device support yourself; an Ethereum-compatible address is not a substitute for a Cardano receiving address.

For ADA, copy the exact network names shown in your apps. This compares your entries, not a verified list of supported networks.

How do you send Cardano to another wallet?

Obtain the recipient's Cardano mainnet address, enter the ADA amount and review the transaction outputs and fee before signing. Use the recipient service's exact deposit instructions, and do not send an Ethereum-wrapped representation where native ADA is required merely because the ticker looks familiar.

Sources 2

How long does a Cardano transfer take?

ADA transfers depend on transaction inclusion and the recipient's confirmation policy, not a guaranteed countdown. Cardano stake pools create blocks under Ouroboros, while a custodian can delay broadcasting or crediting separately; check the transaction identifier and output status before repeating a payment.

Sources 2

How much does it cost to send Cardano?

Cardano's documented basic minimum fee uses protocol parameters linked to transaction size. Review the wallet's current calculation for the exact payment or contract interaction rather than applying one fixed fee to every transaction. A provider's withdrawal charge is a separate business charge.

Sources 2

Is Cardano traceable?

Cardano transactions and outputs are publicly recorded, so ADA is not anonymous by default. Wallets can use multiple addresses, but payment relationships and staking information may still help link activity; exchange identity records or a published address can reveal additional ownership context.

Supply, mining & staking

What is the maximum supply of Cardano?

ADA's documented maximum supply is 45 billion, with remaining reserves released through the reward and treasury system. Maximum supply is different from circulating or delegated supply; staking rewards do not imply unlimited new ADA beyond the protocol's fixed reserve framework.

Sources 2

Can you mine Cardano?

No, native ADA is not mined with proof-of-work hardware. Cardano uses Ouroboros proof of stake and stake pools to produce blocks; a service advertising ADA mining may be describing another activity or converting payouts, not generating native Cardano mining rewards.

Sources 2

Can you stake Cardano?

Yes, ADA can be delegated to a Cardano stake pool without transferring the coins into the pool's custody. Native delegation leaves funds spendable, although registration and reward rules still apply; exchange earn products or liquid-staking contracts are separate arrangements with different risks.
