Algorand
(ALGO)

Algorand is a public smart-contract blockchain, and ALGO is its native coin. ALGO is different from an Algorand Standard Asset issued on the chain. It supports native payments, transaction fees and consensus participation; holding an issued asset does not replace the ALGO needed for network operations.

How does Algorand work?

Algorand uses pure proof-of-stake with cryptographic selection of block proposers and voting committees. Participation keys are distinct from keys used to spend an account's funds. This design does not involve Bitcoin-style mining, and running a node is different from leaving ALGO in an idle wallet.

Who created Algorand?

Algorand's official founding account identifies Silvio Micali as the founder, working with a team of cryptographers and engineers. The project's subsequent development includes multiple organizations and open-source contributors. A founder's research background is not a guarantee about ALGO's market value or any application built on the chain.

What is Algorand used for?

ALGO is used for payments, transaction fees and stake-weighted consensus participation on Algorand. Applications can issue separate assets and run smart contracts, including financial and NFT applications. Buying ALGO alone does not grant ownership of those businesses or make every asset on the network trustworthy.

Where can you buy Algorand?

Check official platform market and withdrawal pages for current ALGO availability in your location. Confirm support for native Algorand deposits, not just an asset with a similar ticker on another chain. Neither a project ecosystem mention nor an exchange comparison matrix verifies a live tradable market.

Before fees and spread. Rounded display, not network precision or an exchange minimum. This is an estimate, not an exchange order quote.

Can you buy a fraction of Algorand?

Yes, ALGO is divisible into microAlgos, with one million microAlgos making one ALGO. Trading and withdrawal minimums can still be larger. A small balance must also cover network fees and applicable account requirements, so the entire displayed balance may not be economically useful for every operation.

How much does it cost to buy Algorand?

Total buying cost includes the ALGO order value plus spread, platform charges and any payment or withdrawal costs. Native Algorand transactions have fees denominated in ALGO. Fees can depend on transaction size, signature choice and congestion, so a previously quoted minimum is not a universal current price.

Algorand wallets & storage

How can you store Algorand securely?

Keep Algorand spending credentials separate from node participation credentials and protect recovery material from online disclosure. Verify any account-management or application permission change before signing. An account can be involved in consensus without handing its spending key to a third-party operator; confirm how a proposed service handles this.

How do you send Algorand to another wallet?

Use a native ALGO payment to the recipient's exact Algorand address and include any deposit note required by the receiving platform. Review fees and the final amount before signing. Verify successful inclusion on the chain, then separately confirm that a custodian credited the deposit.

Sources 2

How long does an Algorand transfer take?

An ALGO payment needs successful inclusion in an Algorand round; a custodian can impose its own processing checks afterward. Protocol finality is not the same as a guaranteed exchange-crediting deadline. Application execution, congestion and a transaction's validity window can also affect whether a submission succeeds.

Sources 2

How much does it cost to send Algorand?

Algorand charges ALGO transaction fees with a protocol minimum and congestion-sensitive calculation. Signature type, serialized size and grouped or inner transactions can affect required payment. Use the wallet's current estimate and a sensible maximum, rather than assuming every operation always costs a single fixed fee.

Can you cash out Algorand for real money?

First confirm that your chosen platform accepts native ALGO and permits sales and fiat withdrawals for your account. Send using its current deposit instructions, then check receipt before selling. Network finality, order execution and the bank or payment-provider withdrawal are separate stages with separate conditions.

Sources 2

Is Algorand traceable?

Algorand is a public ledger, so payment records and application interactions are not private by default. Addresses may be pseudonymous, but counterparties and custodians can associate them with identities. Participation keys do not make the spending account's public transaction history invisible.

Supply, mining & staking

What is the maximum supply of Algorand?

Algorand's official supply document describes 10 billion ALGO created at genesis, rather than ongoing proof-of-work minting. Distribution from allocations and reward funding can still increase circulating supply. The genesis quantity should not be confused with the amount currently trading or available from a particular seller.

Source 1

Can you mine Algorand?

No, ALGO cannot be mined through proof-of-work hashing. Algorand selects consensus participants through its pure proof-of-stake protocol. Operating a participation node can support consensus and may qualify for rewards under current eligibility rules, but it is not a Bitcoin-style mining operation.

Sources 2

Can you stake Algorand?

Algorand supports rewarded online consensus participation, but simply holding ALGO does not automatically qualify an account for block payouts. Eligibility includes opt-in, balance and participation conditions. Pooled or liquid-staking services add their own contracts and custody terms; check those separately from the native consensus rules.
