How does Ethereum work?
Ethereum executes signed transactions and smart contracts, with proof-of-stake validators agreeing on the ledger. ETH pays for computation measured as gas; a contract can fail while still consuming gas, so signing an application transaction is different from making a simple ETH payment.
Who created Ethereum?
Vitalik Buterin published Ethereum's introductory white paper, and multiple contributors developed the network that launched afterward. Ethereum's history also credits Gavin Wood with its technical Yellow Paper; neither that authorship nor the Ethereum Foundation means one person owns every ETH balance.
What is Ethereum used for?
ETH pays Ethereum transaction fees, supports validator staking, and can be transferred or used in smart-contract applications. Lending, trading and collateral uses introduce application-specific risks; holding ETH alone does not automatically activate a savings account or produce guaranteed income.
Where can you buy Ethereum?
Look for a platform that currently permits ETH purchases for your residence and account, then check its official withdrawal-network page. Ethereum mainnet and layer-2 withdrawals are different routes even when both display ETH; this guide does not verify a particular exchange's current availability.
Ethereum exchange reference guides
Before you buyNo unexpired public-catalogue observation is available in this saved guide. This is not a delisting claim or proof that earlier observations were incorrect. Confirm the exact asset, trading access and withdrawal network through the provider before buying. All exchange checklists remain available at the end of this guide.

How can you buy Ethereum safely?
Check the order's asset, total charge and withdrawal network before buying ETH, and enable strong account authentication. For self-custody, obtain an address from your own compatible wallet and preserve ETH for gas; a copied address alone does not establish that both sides selected the same network.
Can you buy a fraction of Ethereum?
Yes, ETH is divisible into wei, with one ETH equal to 10^18 wei. An exchange can impose a much larger minimum purchase and fewer displayed decimals; protocol precision does not mean an extremely small order or withdrawal will be economical or accepted.
How much does it cost to buy Ethereum?
The cost is the ETH order value plus any spread, trading and funding charges shown by your provider. Moving the purchase into your own Ethereum wallet adds withdrawal costs, while an on-chain swap also consumes ETH gas; compare net ETH received rather than just a headline trading fee.
How much is one Ethereum worth?
An ETH quote values Ethereum's native currency. It does not price the right to run an unlimited number of transactions: gas demand and the work performed determine transaction costs separately. Use a current, timestamped market quote as context, then check the ETH quantity and total payment in your order. Ethereum's issuance and fee burning are supply mechanisms, not a promise that the market value will rise.
Is Ethereum a good investment?
ETH has market, custody and smart-contract risks, and staking adds operational penalties or provider risks depending on the arrangement. Fee burning does not guarantee deflation or price appreciation, and using an Ethereum application can expose you to risks beyond holding ETH. This is not financial advice.

Ethereum wallets & storage
How do you get an Ethereum wallet?
Choose a wallet with explicit Ethereum mainnet support and install it from the developer's verified channel. Create the account and protect its recovery method before receiving ETH; enabling a layer-2 network or importing a token does not automatically move funds between networks.
How can you store Ethereum securely?
Protect the keys or recovery phrase controlling your Ethereum account and verify transaction details before signing. Hardware-backed signing can reduce online key exposure, but a malicious approval can still authorize losses; keeping ETH with an exchange instead introduces dependence on that custodian.
Sending & cashing out Ethereum
Match your networks
For ETH, copy the exact network names shown in your apps. This compares your entries, not a verified list of supported networks.
Copy the exact network name shown for this asset in each app. No supported-network catalogue is assumed here.
How do you send Ethereum to another wallet?
Select the recipient's exact network, enter the ETH address and amount, and review the gas estimate before signing. Leave enough ETH for the fee, and do not substitute a WETH token transfer or a layer-2 withdrawal for an Ethereum mainnet payment without the recipient's agreement.
How long does an Ethereum transfer take?
ETH transfer time depends on broadcast, inclusion and finality, not just whether a wallet displays a pending transaction. An exchange can wait for additional confirmations or hold a withdrawal before broadcast; a bridge or layer-2 exit follows another process and should not inherit a mainnet timing estimate.
How much does it cost to send Ethereum?
Ethereum mainnet charges ETH for gas consumed, using a protocol base fee plus any priority fee. Contract calls generally require different computation from simple transfers, and failed execution can still cost gas; an exchange's withdrawal charge is separate from the transaction fee it pays.

Can you cash out Ethereum for real money?
You can cash out ETH only through a service supporting sales and a usable fiat withdrawal method for your account. Confirm whether it accepts Ethereum mainnet or your particular layer-2 balance before depositing; swapping ETH into a stablecoin leaves you holding another crypto asset, not bank cash.
Is Ethereum traceable?
Ordinary Ethereum transfers and account balances are public, so ETH is pseudonymous rather than inherently anonymous. An address need not contain a real name, but exchange records or publicly shared payment details can connect it to a person; wrapping ETH does not itself create privacy.
Supply, mining & staking
What is the maximum supply of Ethereum?
ETH has no fixed maximum supply under its current issuance model. Validator rewards create ETH while fee burning removes it, so total supply can rise or fall; circulating ETH, staked ETH and the amount actually offered for sale are not interchangeable measures.

Can you mine Ethereum?
No, Ethereum mainnet no longer uses proof-of-work mining following the Merge. Its proof-of-stake validators secure the chain instead; an advertised ETH mining service may involve a different chain, converted payouts or a misleading claim, not mining native Ethereum blocks.
Can you stake Ethereum?
Yes, ETH supports native validator staking, while pools and custodial services offer different ways to participate. These arrangements differ in key control, withdrawal access, penalties and smart-contract exposure; a liquid staking token is not identical to freely spendable native ETH, and rewards are not guaranteed.
