How does IOTA work?
IOTA's current Layer 1 processes object-based transactions and Move smart contracts through delegated proof-of-stake validators. Users pay gas in IOTA, and holders can delegate to validator pools. Descriptions of a universally feeless Tangle do not describe these Rebased rules; the EVM layer also has a separate execution environment.
Who created IOTA?
IOTA was created by a team whose co-founders included Dominik Schiener and Serguei Popov, as identified in the Foundation's historical account. The IOTA Foundation and contributors later developed Rebased, launched in May 2025. Original founder attribution is distinct from today's engineering team and independent validators.
What is IOTA used for?
IOTA is used for gas, validator delegation and transactions involving assets or Move applications on its Layer 1. Its ecosystem also supports EVM smart contracts on a distinct Layer 2. These are technical capabilities, not a promise that any particular business application will succeed or that holding IOTA produces income.
Where can you buy IOTA?
Look for IOTA on a platform's current official trading interface, then check eligibility and whether deposits and withdrawals support Rebased. The upgrade announcement is not proof that every platform has resumed service or supports your country. Also distinguish native Layer 1 IOTA from a representation held on IOTA EVM.

How can you buy IOTA safely?
Before buying IOTA, verify the asset, supported withdrawal network and receiving wallet's Rebased compatibility. The old Firefly workflow is not the current mainnet wallet setup. Do not submit recovery material to a migration website sent by a stranger; follow the verified project's wallet guidance and inspect the complete order.
Can you buy a fraction of IOTA?
Yes. One IOTA contains one billion NANOs, so the native asset supports fractions. That protocol precision is different from an exchange's order minimum or rounding policy. Check the unit label carefully: older IOTA materials used other display conventions, and an order form's numeric quantity must match the asset being purchased.
How much does it cost to buy IOTA?
The total cost of buying IOTA depends on the provider's spread, trading and funding charges as well as the order value. Moving funds to self-custody can add a withdrawal charge. Rebased transfers now require IOTA gas, and interacting with objects can involve storage deposits, so old 'feeless' assumptions are unsuitable.
How much is one IOTA worth?
Use this page's timestamped dynamic reference panel for IOTA's indicative market value. The token has no fixed fiat price, and a stale or unavailable reference should not be treated as an order quote. Confirm whether a trading platform quotes the current IOTA asset and review the actual amount and charges.
Is IOTA a good investment?
IOTA carries price, validator, software and application risks; Rebased's Move architecture does not eliminate smart-contract bugs. Its issuance also includes validator subsidies, so historical fixed-supply narratives need updating. Bridging to IOTA EVM adds another system and custody route to evaluate. This is not financial advice.

IOTA wallets & storage
How do you get an IOTA wallet?
Get a wallet explicitly compatible with IOTA Rebased Layer 1 from its verified publisher. The official upgrade guide replaces Firefly with the new wallet workflow and requires compatible hardware-wallet software where used. MetaMask access to IOTA EVM is a different setup; it does not by itself provide Layer 1 compatibility.
How can you store IOTA securely?
Protect the recovery material for your current IOTA wallet and verify the network before approving transactions. For older holdings, follow the official Rebased access guidance instead of signing an unsolicited token migration. Hardware-wallet users must confirm the correct IOTA app; a supported device model alone does not establish software compatibility.
Sending & cashing out IOTA
Match your networks
For IOTA, copy the exact network names shown in your apps. This compares your entries, not a verified list of supported networks.
Copy the exact network name shown for this asset in each app. No supported-network catalogue is assumed here.
How do you send IOTA to another wallet?
Use the recipient's current IOTA Layer 1 address and a Rebased-compatible wallet for a native transfer. Keep enough IOTA for gas and inspect the transaction before signing. Moving to IOTA EVM requires the documented bridge route, not a direct send based only on a similar-looking address or the IOTA name.
How long does an IOTA transfer take?
IOTA transfer completion depends on validator processing and finalization, then on the recipient's crediting policy. A submitted transaction is not the same as an exchange deposit becoming available. For an EVM bridge transfer, check both layers' status; a Layer 1 confirmation does not establish that the destination has completed processing.
How much does it cost to send IOTA?
Current IOTA Layer 1 charges gas in IOTA for computation and can lock a storage deposit when objects are created. Some computation fees are burned, while storage deposits can be recovered when the corresponding storage is removed. Review the wallet estimate rather than relying on old claims of universally free transfers.
Can you cash out IOTA for real money?
Cashing out IOTA requires a service that accepts your network's asset, offers a sale and allows fiat withdrawal to your supported destination. Verify Rebased deposit instructions before transferring. Selling to a stablecoin or moving between IOTA Layer 1 and EVM does not itself deliver money to a bank account.
Is IOTA traceable?
IOTA's current network provides explorers for transactions, validator activity and smart-contract interactions. A wallet address is not automatically a person's name, but disclosed addresses and exchange records can connect activity to an identity. Object-based accounting and the Rebased migration should not be confused with a guarantee of anonymous transfers.
Supply, mining & staking
What is the maximum supply of IOTA?
IOTA's current tokenomics includes newly minted validator subsidies, alongside fee burning and storage deposits. It should not be described using the old fixed maximum alone. Maximum, total and circulating supply are different measures; use current protocol issuance documentation rather than interpreting the amount initially migrated to Rebased as a permanent cap.

Can you mine IOTA?
No, current IOTA uses delegated proof of stake rather than proof-of-work coin mining. Validators process transactions and delegators commit IOTA to their pools. Running a wallet or buying a purported IOTA mining package does not produce native mining rewards, and legacy transaction-work descriptions do not change the current consensus model.
Can you stake IOTA?
Yes. IOTA holders can delegate to validator pools under the Rebased proof-of-stake model. Rewards depend on protocol subsidies, fees and the validator's commission; they are not a fixed guaranteed return. Review activation and withdrawal conditions, and distinguish direct delegation from a third-party liquid-staking token with separate contract risks.
