Neo
(NEO)

Neo is a smart-contract platform; NEO is its governance asset, while GAS pays for network operations. The project began as Antshares and later introduced the N3 network. Native NEO is indivisible, a meaningful difference from most cryptocurrencies and from fractional balances shown inside some exchanges.

How does Neo work?

Neo N3 uses committee-based governance and consensus nodes rather than Bitcoin-style mining. NEO holders can vote for committee candidates, and the most-supported committee members also operate consensus nodes. GAS is a separate asset used for fees; transferring NEO does not mean the fee is deducted in NEO.

Who created Neo?

Da Hongfei and Erik Zhang founded Neo's predecessor, Antshares, in 2014, according to the project's history. Antshares became Neo in 2017, and N3 was a later network upgrade. These milestones distinguish the original founders from subsequent developers, community groups and consensus-node operators.

What is Neo used for?

NEO is used for governance voting and participates in the network's GAS incentive model. Neo applications use smart contracts, oracles and other native infrastructure, but their fees are paid in GAS. Holding NEO is not ownership of an application or a promise of fixed income.

Where can you buy Neo?

Check a platform's official NEO trading screen and eligibility rules before purchasing. Verify whether withdrawals use Neo N3 or Neo Legacy and whether they require whole NEO units. A general Neo listing does not establish support for both networks, your country, or delivery of GAS incentives.

Before fees and spread. Rounded display, not network precision or an exchange minimum. This is an estimate, not an exchange order quote.

How can you buy Neo safely?

Verify NEO rather than GAS, and match the withdrawal network to your receiving wallet's N3 or Legacy support. Check whole-unit withdrawal requirements and how fees are charged. Use the platform's verified interface, secure your account and reject anyone asking for your wallet's private key to 'activate' GAS rewards.

Sources 2

Can you buy a fraction of Neo?

Native NEO cannot be divided: its smallest on-chain unit is one NEO. A platform may let you trade fractional internal balances, but that does not make fractions withdrawable on Neo. GAS is divisible and has different precision; do not confuse its decimals with NEO's rules.

Sources 2

How much does it cost to buy Neo?

Buying NEO costs the order amount plus the provider's spread and trading or funding charges. For self-custody, also inspect whole-unit withdrawal rules and any service charge. Your wallet needs GAS for network operations, so purchasing NEO alone does not necessarily fund a later transfer or governance transaction.

How much is one Neo worth?

Use this page's timestamped dynamic reference panel for an indicative NEO price, then inspect your platform's executable quote. NEO and GAS have separate markets, so check the ticker. A quoted fraction of NEO may be an exchange balance even though native on-chain NEO is indivisible.

Is Neo a good investment?

NEO can lose market value, and committee governance, software changes and application risks remain relevant. GAS incentives are variable and separate from the NEO price; an exchange may not distribute them to customers. A fixed NEO supply does not guarantee returns. This is not financial advice.

Neo wallets & storage

How do you get a Neo wallet?

Choose a wallet explicitly supporting Neo N3 if that is your intended network, using Neo's wallet directory as a starting point. Confirm voting and GAS-claim features separately. Back up the private key or recovery material securely; a wallet that only supports Legacy is not an automatic N3 destination.

Source 1

How can you store Neo securely?

Protect the private keys controlling your Neo account and verify N3 versus Legacy compatibility before using a wallet. Full-node and light wallets have different verification dependencies, which Neo's directory explains. Keep GAS available for needed operations, and never disclose recovery material to someone promising to claim rewards for you.

For NEO, copy the exact network names shown in your apps. This compares your entries, not a verified list of supported networks.

How do you send Neo to another wallet?

Send whole NEO units to an address on the network the recipient actually supports, and retain GAS for the transaction fee. Neo N3 and Legacy are not interchangeable deposit labels. Review the wallet's complete transaction and any platform-specific instructions before authorizing an irreversible transfer.

Sources 2

How long does a Neo transfer take?

A Neo transfer must be processed by the network's consensus nodes before a recipient can treat it as confirmed. An exchange can require additional checks or delay a withdrawal before broadcasting. Verify the correct N3 or Legacy transaction record instead of assuming a platform's pending status measures only blockchain speed.

Sources 2

How much does it cost to send Neo?

Neo N3 fees are paid in GAS, not NEO. System fees and network fees serve different purposes; the official model burns system fees and distributes network fees to consensus nodes. Review the transaction estimate and distinguish those protocol charges from a provider's NEO withdrawal charge.

Sources 2

Can you cash out Neo for real money?

Cashing out NEO requires a platform that accepts your Neo network and supports selling plus fiat withdrawal for your account. Confirm whole-unit deposit and withdrawal requirements before transferring. Selling GAS rewards or swapping NEO to a stablecoin is a separate transaction, not automatically money arriving in your bank.

Sources 2

Is Neo traceable?

Neo transactions and governance votes are blockchain records, so NEO is not an anonymity product. An address does not inherently identify a person, but public disclosures and custodial records can connect it to one. Keeping N3 and Legacy histories distinct does not make either network's activity untraceable.

Supply, mining & staking

What is the maximum supply of Neo?

NEO's maximum supply is 100 million tokens, all generated at genesis according to Neo's documentation. This does not describe GAS, whose N3 issuance model is different and has no equivalent supply limit. Circulating NEO and tokens reserved or held by organizations are separate measures.

Sources 2

Can you mine Neo?

No, NEO is not produced through proof-of-work mining. The supply was created at genesis, and N3 relies on consensus nodes and governance voting. GAS incentives received by NEO holders or voters are distributions of a different asset, not newly mined NEO.

Sources 2

Can you stake Neo?

NEO's GAS incentives do not require conventional proof-of-stake lockup. Holding NEO and voting under N3's governance model can qualify for GAS distributions, with different rules for voters and ordinary holders. A custodial 'NEO staking' product may add its own terms and need not pass every incentive through.
