How does Ontology work?
Ontology uses Verifiable Byzantine Fault Tolerance, combining proof of stake, verifiable randomness and Byzantine fault-tolerant consensus. ONT holders can support consensus nodes through staking, while transactions consume ONG. Its EVM compatibility extends application support without making ONT an Ethereum ERC-20 token or changing the native gas asset.
Who created Ontology?
Ontology's own announcement identifies Li Jun as its founder. The network also relies on developers, governance contracts and consensus-node operators, so founder attribution is different from control of every transaction. Applications using ONT ID are separate products, not necessarily assets or services personally created by the founder.
What is Ontology used for?
ONT is used for Ontology governance and node staking, while the network supports identity and data services such as ONT ID. ONG, not ONT, pays native transaction costs. Holding ONT alone does not grant access to someone's private identity data or guarantee demand from applications using the network.
Where can you buy Ontology?
Check an exchange's official ONT market and withdrawal pages for your country and account before buying. Confirm that it delivers ONT on the network your wallet accepts, not ONG or a bridged representation. An old exchange example in project documentation is not proof of current local availability.

How to buy Ontology
Plan your purchaseHow much Ontology?
How can you buy Ontology safely?
Confirm ONT's ticker, native withdrawal network and purchase total before paying, and verify that your wallet supports Ontology's updated transfer format. Keep ONG available for later transactions. Review account holds and test the receiving route; buying ONT without gas can leave a self-custodied balance unable to move.
Can you buy a fraction of Ontology?
Yes. The EVM and decimals upgrade changed native ONT from zero to nine decimal places, so older claims that ONT cannot be divided are outdated. A platform may still enforce whole-unit withdrawals or larger order minimums. Check its current precision rather than confusing technical divisibility with its commercial rules.
How much does it cost to buy Ontology?
The cost of buying ONT includes its order value plus any spread, trading, funding and withdrawal charges. For native self-custody, also budget ONG for transactions; holding ONT is not a substitute for gas. Network upgrades and platform withdrawal settings can make a legacy fee example inappropriate.
How much is one Ontology worth?
Compare a recent ONT market reference with the executable order. ONT and ONG have different roles and separate markets; ONT is not the gas token merely because both belong to Ontology. Include spread, trading, funding and withdrawal costs rather than treating a displayed unit price as the total bill.
Is Ontology a good investment?
ONT carries price, adoption, validator and governance risks, while the separate ONG gas model adds operational complexity. Staking exposes funds to node and withdrawal conditions, and identity-related applications do not guarantee token demand. ONG tokenomics changes should not be mistaken for an ONT investment guarantee. This is not financial advice.

Ontology wallets & storage
How do you get an Ontology wallet?
Choose a wallet with current native Ontology support, such as an officially linked ONTO or OWallet distribution, and back up its recovery material. Verify support for the upgraded ONT and ONG formats before receiving funds. An EVM address or visible token name alone does not establish the correct transfer route.
How can you store Ontology securely?
Protect the keys for your native Ontology account and back up recovery material separately from the device used for transactions. Keep ONG for necessary operations and review staking permissions. A platform balance has different custody risks; hardware support must be verified for the exact current wallet integration.
Sending & cashing out Ontology
Match your networks
For ONT, copy the exact network names shown in your apps. This compares your entries, not a verified list of supported networks.
Copy the exact network name shown for this asset in each app. No supported-network catalogue is assumed here.
How do you send Ontology to another wallet?
Use a native Ontology transfer route that both wallets support, verify the receiving address and retain ONG for gas. Check any platform-specific deposit instructions before sending ONT. The decimals upgrade introduced new transfer handling, so outdated exchange software or whole-unit assumptions can cause a mismatch.
How long does an Ontology transfer take?
ONT transfers depend on VBFT transaction confirmation and the recipient's processing rules, not Bitcoin mining confirmations. An exchange can add withdrawal reviews and deposit delays. Staked ONT may first need to pass governance exit conditions, which are distinct from the time needed to broadcast an ordinary wallet transfer.
How much does it cost to send Ontology?
Native Ontology transfer fees are paid in ONG, even when the asset being sent is ONT. The required gas depends on the transaction and current network settings, so check the wallet estimate. A platform withdrawal charge is separate, and its ONT-denominated charge need not equal the protocol's ONG cost.
Can you cash out Ontology for real money?
Cashing out ONT requires a service that accepts your native deposit, allows a sale and supports fiat withdrawals for your account. Check ONT versus ONG carefully before transferring, along with identity checks and bank availability. Selling for another cryptocurrency or stablecoin does not itself deliver money to a bank.
Is Ontology traceable?
Ontology exposes blockchain transactions through its public explorer, so ordinary ONT transfers should not be treated as anonymous. ONT ID applications can manage selective identity disclosure, but that is different from hiding native token movements. Publicly shared addresses or an exchange's customer records can supply identifying context.
Supply, mining & staking
What is the maximum supply of Ontology?
The official token-protocol documentation describes 1 billion ONT. Do not confuse that ONT allocation with the separate ONG supply: Ontology announced ONG's reduction to 800 million in December 2025. Maximum, total and circulating supply are different measures, and staking or locking does not create additional ONT.
Can you mine Ontology?
No. Ontology's native consensus is VBFT with proof-of-stake components, not proof-of-work mining. ONT supports governance and staking, while ONG has its own distribution and gas role. A third-party service advertising ONT mining is not evidence of a native mining mechanism or a guaranteed payout.
Can you stake Ontology?
Yes, native ONT can be staked to support Ontology nodes, with rewards associated with the separate ONG asset. Review node terms, governance-round exit rules and gas requirements before committing funds. This is not ordinary ONT mining, and neither a particular reward rate nor immediate access to staked funds is guaranteed.
