How does THORChain work?

THORChain nodes observe connected chains and use threshold signatures to control shared vaults for cross-chain settlement. Nodes bond RUNE as slashable security, while liquidity pools pair supported assets with RUNE. A swap involves more than one chain, unlike simply sending available native RUNE between THORChain accounts.

Who created THORChain?

THORChain's official FAQ attributes its 2018 founding to a pseudo-anonymous core contributor team, including Chad Barraford. It separately describes Nine Realms' operational involvement. That history does not establish a single inventor or make any contributor personally responsible for every interface, node or asset pool.

What is THORChain used for?

RUNE acts as the settlement pair in THORChain liquidity pools, pays native network fees and backs node security bonds. These functions differ from owning TCY, the separate token associated with the THORFi debt restructuring. Holding RUNE alone does not create a liquidity position or guarantee protocol-revenue distributions.

How can you buy THORChain safely?

Verify native RUNE and the THORChain receiving route before placing an order. For cross-chain swaps, inspect the destination, memo instructions, minimum received and current network status using the official interface. Do not send funds to a vault or bonding address unless you intend that documented operation; test ordinary withdrawals separately.

Sources 3

Can you buy a fraction of THORChain?

Yes, native RUNE supports fractional balances; the pooled-node documentation expresses protocol amounts using eight decimal places. A trading venue can impose larger order and withdrawal minimums. Do not confuse a fractional spendable RUNE balance with bond collateral or a liquidity receipt that requires its own withdrawal process.

How much is one THORChain worth?

Check that a RUNE quote concerns the native asset rather than a legacy external-chain token or TCY. Network settlement and bonding uses do not establish a fixed market value. Compare the executable order and all charges with a recent reference; a liquidity-pool position is not the same holding as spot RUNE.

Sources 4

Is THORChain a good investment?

RUNE carries price, vault-security, liquidity and node-incentive risks. The THORFi debt restructuring and creation of TCY show that lending-related losses and ordinary swap functionality must be assessed separately. Bonding can expose collateral to slashing, and protocol economics do not establish a guaranteed price floor. This is not financial advice.

THORChain wallets & storage

How do you get a THORChain wallet?

Choose a wallet that explicitly supports native THORChain RUNE and verify its mainnet receiving address before funding. Back up recovery credentials offline and keep RUNE available for fees. An Ethereum-compatible wallet displaying an old RUNE contract is not sufficient evidence of support for today's native asset.

Sources 3

How can you store THORChain securely?

Protect the keys for the native THORChain account and review every transaction memo, particularly bonding and swap instructions. Keeping RUNE in your wallet is different from committing it to a pooled node or liquidity pool. Hardware integration and custodial withdrawal support must be verified for the exact asset and network.

How long does a THORChain transfer take?

A same-chain RUNE transfer depends on THORChain inclusion and the recipient's crediting policy. Cross-chain swaps additionally require observations and outbound processing on other networks. Bond withdrawals can depend on node and vault lifecycle conditions, so neither a nominal block interval nor a swap estimate guarantees when committed RUNE becomes available.

Sources 2

How much does it cost to send THORChain?

Native THORChain transactions consume RUNE for network fees. Cross-chain swaps also have slip-based charges and outgoing costs associated with the destination blockchain's gas asset. Check the current operation-specific quote; an exchange withdrawal charge is separate, and sending RUNE is not priced identically to swapping into Bitcoin or Ethereum.

Source 1

Is THORChain traceable?

THORChain RUNE transfers, pool activity and bond transactions are public network activity, and cross-chain swaps can link records on multiple ledgers. Pseudonymous node operators do not make user transfers anonymous. Exchange customer records, disclosed addresses and swap details can add identifying information to the on-chain history.

Supply, mining & staking

What is the maximum supply of THORChain?

The current tokenomics page points to accepted ADR-023, which sets the RUNE maximum-supply parameter to 360 million through a consensus migration. Older documents still quote 500 million and should not be treated as current. Burns reduce outstanding supply further; verify live chain values separately from this documented parameter.

Sources 2

Can you mine THORChain?

No, RUNE is not mined through proof-of-work hash competition. THORChain uses bonded nodes and threshold-signature infrastructure, while rewards and burns follow its economic rules. A service distributing RUNE for unrelated computing or deposits is not evidence of native RUNE mining, and operating a node entails different infrastructure and collateral requirements.

Sources 2

Can you stake THORChain?

RUNE can support network security through node bonding, including operator-whitelisted pooled bond-provider arrangements. This is not unrestricted Cosmos-style delegation, and the bond can be slashed or constrained by node lifecycle rules. Liquidity provision and TCY staking are separate products; verify the exact mechanism rather than accepting a generic RUNE staking yield.
