How does Optimism work?
OP Mainnet is an Ethereum Layer 2 rollup: a sequencer processes transactions, batches publish data to Ethereum, and fault-proof contracts support settlement. OP holders participate in governance rather than running an OP-based proof-of-stake consensus. Initial sequencer confirmation and Ethereum-backed finality represent different levels of assurance.
Who created Optimism?
Optimism was developed by a team that includes co-founder Jing Wang and long-time Ethereum scaling contributors such as Karl Floersch and Ben Jones. The OP token supports the later Collective governance system. It is not a company share or an automatic entitlement to revenue from OP Labs or the Foundation.
What is Optimism used for?

Can you buy a fraction of Optimism?
Yes. OP's governance token on OP Mainnet supports fractional balances, so buying a whole token is not a protocol requirement. Its official token specification lists 18 decimal places, confirmed by a read-only query to the deployed token. Check your provider's minimum order and withdrawal amounts separately. Ordinary OP Mainnet transfers need ETH for gas; a small OP balance does not itself fund that fee.

What is the maximum supply of Optimism?
OP began with approximately 4.295 billion tokens, and the Foundation's August 2026 budget still uses that original allocation framework. That historical allocation is not evidence of an immutable forever-cap. Unlocking existing allocations changes their availability without necessarily minting new tokens; check approved governance decisions before asserting a current inflation setting.
Can you mine Optimism?
OP cannot be mined through proof-of-work, and running an OP Mainnet node does not automatically mint OP. The rollup derives its chain from Ethereum-backed data and settlement. Token issuance is governed separately from sequencer transaction processing and should not be confused with Ethereum validator rewards.
Can you stake Optimism?
OP is not the proof-of-stake asset used to secure Ethereum, and ordinary OP governance delegation does not inherently earn protocol staking rewards. A product advertised as OP staking needs its own verified contract, funding and withdrawal terms. Lending, liquidity provision and promotional rewards add risks and are not equivalent to native consensus staking.
